Pascale Weiwers has become a pioneering figure in basketball refereeing, breaking barriers and inspiring women in sports. With nearly 40 years of experience and approximately 3,500 games officiated, she has earned widespread respect in a field once dominated by men.
A Career of Firsts
Starting her career in 1986 at just 18, Weiwers was the only woman among male referees. โBack then, I was an exotic figure,โ she recalls, noting the progress made since. Her dedication and professionalism have set a high standard in the basketball community.
Championing Equality
While acceptance of female referees has improved in Luxembourg, Weiwers has faced occasional sexist remarks. โThereโs always one person who attacks below the belt,โ she said, adding that such comments donโt faze herโthough she draws the line when family members are targeted. She also highlights the greater challenges women face in countries with less gender equality, such as parts of Eastern Europe or the UAE.
Mentor and Role Model
Committed to supporting young women in sports officiating, Weiwers serves as a mentor, encouraging others to follow her path. Her story is a testament to resilience and determination.
Recognition
Recently honored at an exhibition at La Coque, Luxembourgโs national sports center, Weiwers was celebrated as one of 15 women making a significant impact on sports. Though humbled by the recognition, she called it โa great honor.โPascale Weiwers continues to lead by example, championing equality and inspiring future generations of referees.
