🐣 Rookies Corner: Tips for New Referees
If your colleague does not show up…
Sometimes, despite the best planning, you might find yourself the only official at a scheduled basketball
game. While this isn’t ideal, it happens—and how you handle it matters.
- First, communicate. Inform the coaches and game organizers as soon as you realize you’re solo. Clarify expectations and remind them that your goal is still to officiate a fair, safe game. Most will appreciate your professionalism and transparency. Next, adjust your approach. Without a partner, you’ll need to cover the full court.
- Position yourself smartly — favor the trail position and keep a wider view of the play. You may not catch everything, but maintaining good angles and hustle will help you make the most accurate calls possible.
- Prioritize safety and major infractions. You can’t see everything, so focus on what matters most—dangerous plays, clear violations, and game control. Be decisive, even if you miss some minor contact.
- Use your voice more. Communicate clearly with players and coaches to maintain order. A confident presence goes a long way in earning respect.
- Working solo is tough, but it’s also a chance to show leadership and resilience. Stay composed, give your best effort, and remember—you’re never truly alone. Your local referee community is there to support you before, during, and after the game.
